Far South Orchestra Plays with NZSO

Sandra from the Invercargill Symphonia has provided us with this account of the Symphonia, and its side-by-side rehearsal with the NZSO:

The Invercargill Symphonia is a small community orchestra, made up of a diverse membership of young adults through to more senior adults, and a variety of professions from vets to doctors, teachers, graphic designers, farmers, conservationists and more.

We have some very talented and dedicated musicians and at the heart of the orchestra is a love of music and being able to create music together.

We lack a few instruments and sometimes have to get creative (clarinet/bass clarinet often substituting for bassoons), but we have a great time and enjoy our rehearsals and concerts.

Our conductor, Wayne Perniske, keeps us in line (mostly) and has been great at picking out music for us. Wayne is a seasoned musician with a great sense of humour, which certainly helps!

We recently had a side-by-side rehearsal with the NZSO. Our main project this year, that will continue into next year, is learning Beethoven’s 6th Symphony. We performed Beethoven’s 5th Symphony last year and were determined to take on the 6th. We focused on the first movement of the symphony with the NZSO and had a wonderful time playing alongside these brilliant musicians. We all thoroughly enjoyed the rehearsal, and all the insights, suggestions, directions, enthusiasm and support we received from the NZSO. We are all very grateful for the opportunity and continue to feel inspired.
